H5O Bistro is the restaurant in Hotel Fifty, where we spent our first two nights this trip to Portland. The restaurant overlooks Tom McCall Waterfront Park and the Willamette River, and played host to a Duck Pond Cellars winemaker dinner our first evening. I was quite impressed with Duck Pond’s commitment to quality at a low price point, with wines as low as $10.
We had a chance to sample food from each meal of service, starting with lunch. (We were actually craving some vegetables after eating at Nong’s.)
Lunch: Dungeness crab and rocket salad w/ginger vinaigrette, strawberry, goat cheese, mint, and Szechuan peppercorn
Lunch: Green bean salad with whipped Dijon mustard, radish, red onion, and soy cloud (loved the cloud!)
Lunch: Shrimp tempura roll with sweet tamarind sauce (too sweet – get soy sauce instead)
Dinner course one: Onion tart, smoky bacon, comte (w/2008 Pinot Gris)
Dinner course two: Seared halibut, buttered popcorn beurre blanc, braised carrot (w/2007 Chardonnay)
Dinner course three: Duck breast, fennel pollen gnocchi, cherry tomato, confit of leg (w/2008 Red Blend) – loved the fatty duck!
Dinner course four: Blueberry panna cotta, balsamic caviar, crispy berries (w/2005 Semillon)
Breakfast: House-smoked salmon hash with soft-poached egg, sofrito, and avocado puree
Breakfast: Lox and bagel with whipped cream cheese, crispy capers, and lemon marmalade (the marmalade was a weird fit for this dish)
