We love bones. And we’re here to give you some solid advice about where you indulge if you, too, are a bone-a-fide bone-lover.
Crémant recently launched an “Egg-centric” brunch service (weekends, 10-3), and in addition to some good-looking egg and potato dishes (each month’s menu will feature different types of eggs from [...]

Catch-Up: Asian Food and Noodles on the Road
October 19th, 2008 · No Comments
This should finally catch me up on my missed meals of note (or not so noteworthy) on the road.
In Worcester (MA), a stop at Dalat Restaurant and a bowl of hu tieu nam vang, per the server’s recommendation. The menu promises a variety of seafood, along with “sliced porks, fish’s cakes,…lever, heart” and more. Promising, [...]

Mrs. London’s Almond Croissant
October 19th, 2008 · No Comments
Alright…so there’s decent BBQ in Saratoga Springs. But if you read Saveur magazine, then you know that there’s a place in Saratoga Springs which you must try. Mrs. London’s makes an almond croissant which Saveur said is something special and I can now affirm: it is. They’re filled with almond cream, brushed with rum syrup, [...]

BBQ in Saratoga Springs, NY and Manchester, NH
October 19th, 2008 · 3 Comments
Chinese and Vietnamese tend to be my fall-back foods on the road, but sometimes I’m a sucker for BBQ. However you want to write it (barbeque, Bar-B-Q, barbecue, Bar-B-Que, etc.), it’s quick, smoky and meaty goodness. I can’t say that I prefer any region’s BBQ over another’s, as I really appreciate all the differences. What [...]

Sliders and More at Matt’s in the Market
October 19th, 2008 · No Comments
A few months ago, Matt’s in the Market competed in a berries and cherries “Dish-Off,” which I wrote up for Sound magazine and also posted here. Recently, we moseyed over to Matt’s not for a competition, but instead for a celebration of its new management and a few menu items.
Chef Chet Gerl and his crew [...]

Can Anyone Identify This Oil?
October 17th, 2008 · 1 Comment
I found this amusingly named (Bunge Pricklyash) oil at HT Oaktree Market recently. It seems to be a peel or seed that might be somewhat related to Szechuan peppercorn.
Anyone know what it is? Anyone used the product?

Sound goes on a quest for the comfiest of comfort foods
Comfort food can be difficult to define. For me, it’s something familiar (perhaps evoking a childhood memory), simple to prepare, and usually stick-to-your ribs hearty – especially ideal in winter. Typically meaty, melty and/or moist, comfort foods make me feel more happy than healthy; a [...]

In St. Petersburg: Bun Bo Hue at Pho 97
October 15th, 2008 · 1 Comment
Still on the road, and still in search of something decent to eat in a hurry. Pho is almost always the answer.
I head to Ben Tranh, but it’s become Taste of Asia and the sign advertises Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese fare. Hmm. I think I’ll go back a block to the funky pho place I [...]

Coming Soon: This Year’s Seattle Sound reviews
October 15th, 2008 · No Comments
I’m working on the year-end Dish-Off review for Seattle Sound magazine. It’s been a fun year of Iron Chef-like reviews, and I’d like to share them all with you. If all goes as planned, I’ll post one per week (typically on Thursday) for the next twelve weeks, culminating in the year-end issue (featuring the top [...]

In Orlando: China Lee and Jennifer 8 Lee
October 15th, 2008 · No Comments
Another day on the road, and another so-so Chinese restaurant meal.
I was in Orlando yesterday, with limited time for food, so I made a convenience stop at China Lee, Express China Lee, #1 Express China Lee–or whatever the real name is. This restaurant is basically a take-out joint with just four tables. I ordered “L32″–Hunan [...]
